Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare is a tragic love story. It tells two young teenagers dead for love at the end. I chose balcony scene in this play, involving two characters totally which are Romeo and Juliet. Romeo saw Juliet in a big party, and he immediately falls in love with her. However, it is hard for them to meet and talk because their famailes are enemy. So after the party,Romeo went Juliet house. He called Juliet under the balcony.
This is the scene Romeo and Juliet make sure their relationships. It is a turning point that they decided to stay together even their famaily say no. In this balcony scene,Romeo shows a very postive attitude. He hopes Juliet will accept him, and he views Juliet as something bright and warm. “It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.” At the same time, he also wants Juliet loves him in a same passion way, that is why he shouts when he heard Juliet. “She speaks, speak again! my broght angel.” I think since this is the first time Romeo feels love, he needs his lover to responce him in a same way, it makes him feel safe and happy. If Juliet gives him any signal showing like him, Romeo will be so excited. Love is not only about like each other, both have to carry some responsibilies. For man, one of the responsibility for sure is giving safety to woman, so lots of men would like to promise to do something. Our Romeo is like this too,he promised Juliet nobody can stop their love. he told Juliet “I take thee at thy word. Call me but love, and I will be new baptized;Henceforth I never will be Romeo.” Moreover,Romeo shows an attitude that he hates this love cannot be blessed by their famailes only because his famaily and Juliet’s famaily are enemy. He somehow hates he born in this famaily, “By a name,I know not how to tell thee who I am, My name, dear saint,is hateful to myself, because it is an enemy to thee.” I understand what Romeo feels, he hates anything that try to stop his love. He must imagined that if he is not Romeo, he might can love a girl without many people oppose. Romeo is not afraid of those who wants block his love, he is confident that he can hold Juliet’s hands to the end. Romeo is brave, he can sacrifice himself anytime. Love is like a drug makes people get crazy.
Juliet changed a lot from the beginning including her attitude to love, she used to be a girl who obey her parents. However she met Romeo, everything changed. She became brave. In our scene, she has not change yet. So my partner decieded to do a blocking like we stand very far away from each other at the beginning. As I am talking to her,I move closer to her,but she moves back at the same time. This shows she is not sure if this is right or not. Romeo did not change at all,his love keeps forever. I kneel down for Juliet,I pray for her to speak again,I tell her nothing can stops our love,I promise her we would stay forever. I used some body languages to express my feeling. In addition,I emphasized some words in order to tell “I really love Juliet” for example “Juliet”, “again”,“hate”. Since Romeo’s passion love keeps for the whole scene, I have to keep saying lines with a emotion that earger to something. Except moving closer to Juliet, I am suppose to do something more because it is hard to be realistic if a passion man’s only movement is walking closer. So I have to try to catch Juliet’hands and hold her. At first, Juliet suppose to hide from my catching, then she changed her mind. So I can hold her hand

He copyed many sentences and anlysised very detailed. It is clear to see he quoted and anylsised many things, but it is a little bit general. Or he focused on Margaret’s emotion too much.
6/10
He wanted mix his acting with his thinking, but he did not expressed well. It seems like he wrote too much performance, but he forgot to say the meaning of each lines. On the other hand, he kept using his own vision to write, wirting many things that he exprienced by himself. However, we have to know lines meaning because we did not read before. After we know the meaning, we are able to see if this man his the same idea. Moreover,I feel his writes did not match his thesis. He talled about Margaret all the time which is not good.

In my opinion,he did best on this part of language use. He has no grammar mistakes and build his essay organized. However he talked about too much literature anlysis.

In general, It is a good essay. And it is long enough,so I think it must be a detailed essay. In her performance she showed her character’s emotian well by using body language. In addition, she deeply go into each lines and catched charater’s attitude of what they think. She did a great job on relating her own performance and line’s meaning, which makes readers feel it is well organized.
8/10
Like what I said before, since she understood each line clearly, she can easily know by using which ways to show,to act. “ I decided to kneel down in this moment of despair,...drastically increasing my voice.” She has right blocking sense. And she gave enough reasons why she do those movements,on the other hand she expressed her thoughts. She thought it was challengable because the different states of mind she has to go through different stages. In this paragraph, she talked about what she learnt from this performance, she became more engaging with the character. That is good to hear a actor said this.
4/5
My first impression of this essay is words amount. There are 1999words. Her introduction covered completed telling Ophelia and why she chose to play this scene. Same with the sample one, there is no grammar mistake, but she organized essay better.
Scene reflection
Balcony scene is a turning point in the whole play, it is the start that Romeo and Juliet fall in love. At first I decide to try a challengeble role Juliet, but It is just unsuitble for me because I do not know much about how girl’s blocking move. It was just too awkward for me. Thus, I decided to play Romeo. In this scene, Romeo is postive, he seemes to be first time seeing girl, he eagers to get attention from Juliet or he hopes Juliet can love him in a same way. For showing this kind of attitude, I am supposed to do some movements. When I say Juliet is the sun, I have to point at Juliet and stressed the Juliet. Romeo descibes Juliet as a sun, which means no matter how bad Romeo mood is, when Romeo meets Juliet, he would feel warm. At the same time, Juliet is little nervous to accept, so at the beginning as Romeo move close to Juliet, Juliet move backwards. She worried their relationship is going to opposed by their famailes and at that time, Juliet does want to obey anything her mom orders. However,it is undeniable Juliet love staying together with Romeo. When we acting, although she moves back but just a little bit, so at the end Romeo can get her hand and promise they are going to stay forever.
In this scene, Romeo’s mood does not has big fluctuation, he keep telling Juliet “I love you and we do not have to care what others think, we can stay forever.” However, Juliet’s attitude changes. From the beginning that she is afraid this love will be a torture since their parents opposed, to the end that she trusts Romeo, they will get a bright future.
I missed two weeks of school. I have less time than others to practice, this makes me cannot remember lines cleary. In fact, I can remember every single line, but I sometimes forget the order. “What shoud I responce after Juliet talks?” is stucked in my mind. That is why I chekced lines several times. I have to improve on this shortage next time. I think the way I practice caused the problem. Since I was alone in China, I repeated my lines again and again but my partner would not react. So I am not very famailar with the right time to say my line. The improvment I see on myself is when I can do the blockings. I remember at first, I did not know any skills of acting. I standed on the stage and speaked my line. It might be good if it is a speech, but it is nothing on acting. Thanks for the help from my partner and Ms.Guarino,I started to know what should I do on stage. My body has to face to audience, I need kneel down when I show hoping something.
It was my first time performing on this stage, I think next time I have to express my emotion more realistic because this time it seems like I just obey what my partner told me.

First day:
At the beginning, we had a short conversation discuss about which role should I play. My first choice was Juliet, but when I look at the scripts I changed my mind. As a actor, one thing that has to keep in mind is always remember your scripts, you cannot say “I forget what I gonnna say” during the performanc. So the main goal for the first day is to remember the first part ( we decided the parts that seperated into three parts) scripts. That was really hard for me, especailly there are some weried pronunciations like “wherefore art thou Romeo” or “I take thee at thy word.” Thanks for helping me,my good partener translated into mordern language for me. That helped me to remember scripts easily. And one way to I figured out is in this scene that Romeo’s only goal is to spend time with Juliet. So,he must be very excited when he hears Juliet sound. When I think about this, I would know scripts. At first day,I could not remember scripts detaily, but I could know what should I talk about next.
Second day:
After one day, I already knew all the scripts. We just practiced. Our purpose is to get more famailar with those scripts. However this time,I was being more emotional. I read scipts slowly and let audience can hear clearly. Anyway we kind of like reviewed what we did yesterday.
Also, one more thing to add. I looked around how others doing their scene, I found out some of them using props. I thought that is a good idea, because sometimes I feel awkward when I do not know where I should put my hands. If I have a prop,at least I can hold something. And I believe that is usually how professional actors do.
Third day:
For the previous two days,we worked on scripts. Today, we designed blocking issues. After we had a conversation,we made an agreement. At the beginning of the scene, we stand in the opposite place. And as we say one paragraph, we move one step. And At the end, we are going to meet. That shows a process of Romeo and Juliet fell in love. However,we feel only feet moves is not enough, thus we decided to add more layers for example face expression ad arm moves. All these movements are for enhancing the role’s personailty.
I like constantin stanislavski'theory a lot. He taught actors it is not necessary to exaggerate in a play because sometimes it can only makes unreal. He propose actors should act normally and naturally.
From the scene I play, I try to act or speak normally. I feel if I put so much attitude to it, audiences will think the original Romeo is not that radical. We've already practiced the blocking part, but I don't think that is perfect. We lack some layers. Me and my partner only have a general idea that Romeo and Juliet stand in opposite place, and as they say their scripts, they move closer. However, when we really doing that, I feel a little awkward that we are like Roberts that only feet move. So why not add some face expression, for example when Romeo saying "oh she speaks, speak again bright angel. I could show a face like love Juliet so much, eager to hear her voice.

I am going to play the Act 2 Scene 2. Generaly we call this balcony scene. It shows when after the party, Romeo came to find Juliet and he expressed love to Juliet. And Juliet responsed to Romeo as well. That is the first time they build their relationships as lovers. So when we performing this scene, it is important to show at first Romeo has to be a little nervous that what if Juliet rejects him, also for Juliet she has to be a little shy too. However the middle part has a big change when they already fell in love, they felt more free. Then each one’s attitude will change, they should be both happy for having each other. They feel the sweatness of love. Therefore, for expressing their moods,it is a good idea to show very differently between before and after. For example, when Romeo first having conversation with Juliet under balcony, Romeo’s voice can be gentle and quiet. However, when they decide to date, Romeo cannot wait to see Juliet the next time. Especially Romeo is a young teenagers, and that is his first time feeling love. He can show an attitude that he does not want to say goodbye to Juliet so quickly, but also he looks forward to the next date.
This is not a short scene, it includes many clues of what personailty does Romeo and Juliet has. Romeo and Juliet are both brave, they don’t afraid of showing love. They could even against their famaily to stay with each other. Like what I said in the previous paragraph, the major word in this scene is hope. They hope they will have a bright future, they want to fight for their tomorrow. Love is powerful,it makes people are brave enough to meet any problems. In my opinion, Romeo and Juliet theme is this. So when we performing this scene, we have to show audience a postive attitude. We can add some motion to strengthen what we try to present---hope. There are so many movements we can do, such as running hurry, walk around to consider is it a smart choice to talk to Juliet under balcony.
Since that is the first time they get attached, most of the audience know their characteristics from here. The point is during the play we can not make directly tell audience what they are like because it is just too unprofessional. We are going to step by step tells what they are like. Moreover I will catch any chances to show “hope” in the play. For me that is the keyword, all the thing is around this word.

The scene I am going to play is the balcony scene. This is the first scene that has to recite long scripts, whcih is difference from before. And I sum up two general ideas that how to play this scene.
For costume, we do not have to really dress up like Romeo and Juliet, we can just dress up what teen wear. Just being normal or else audiences will probably feel odd. I want only scripts based on original play. Because this is a balcony scene,Juliet need to stand on something higher than the ground. A simple stepladder works.
Anthor thing is actors face expression and movement. These are important. Audiences can better understand the scene from the face expression. In this scene, Romeo and Juliet should be eager to get each other, Therefore,it should seemed to look forward to something. Movement’s function, basicly makes audiences think play is beliveble because try to imagine when nobody moves on the stage, it only has a conversation. That is too fake, that is impossible to happen in real life.

Romeo:
“But soft, what light through yonder window breaks?
It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.
Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,
Who is already sick and pale with grief
Juliet:
Ay me!

quiz
A: Juliet is like a just borned bird that did not know what is love, and then she met Romeo who is her favorite that no matter how hard they stay together. In my opinion,Juliet was getting more and more brave to chace love from Act1 to Act2. I remember in the balcony scene.when Romeo spoke to Juliet that let her go down, Juliet was afraid that his voice was going to cause their famaily come. She shows an attitude that they could date secretly but it almost impossible to tell their parents they were going to marry. She tried to hide they fell in love because she was afraid of his father or we can say she cared more about his famaily. However,as she spent more time with Romeo, their love became more powerful that made Juliet did something against his father’s idea. For example pretend to die for avoiding marriage and married with Romeo secretly. For Romeo, he just kept himselfs like the beginning. Because he didn’t get too much force from his famaily, which means his opinion or status in his famaily is more important than Juliet in her famaily. That is the gender difference in Romeo and Juliet this literature.
C: From my standpoint, their deaths are worth. Some people might say it is obviously a huge tragedy that they both died. However I think their two lives died all the people in this city get peace. That is kind of a good deal. Why we think it is unfair or not worth because we view them as the main roles, but it is undeniable there are many people in this city. So there are lots of people benifit from their death.
F: Juliet is a cute and lively girl in this film, which is same with the original play. However,I remember when she shows up,she is putting her header in water. It seemed that she was thinking about something. Thus, this is little bit different from original that Juliet is not a fully simple girl. She has her own mind, she knows how to think. When I was reading the original play, I thought Juliet is around 14 years old, she does not know how to show love. Film just changes, there are certain scenes that Romeo and Juliet are cuddleing or kissing, and Juliet is like “easy to handle all of these”. For example in balcony scene and one scene they are on bed. Therefore, juliet general characteristic like lively does not change in the film, but film just design Juliet is more mature than the original play.
First of all, Baz Lurhmann version of Romeo and Juliet is more moderlized than the original one. In especial stage property has changed a lot in this film , for example instead of using sword to fight, people use guns to fight. Moreover, costumes are more colorful, which is very close to nowdays fashion. Director wanted to show the differences between two famails,so he decided to use two types of cloth. For Romeo famaily, their clothes are more like a style of Hawii. And Juliet’s famaily has a style of mafia, most of them wear suits. However, the difference in original play is not very visiable,it only tells they are enmey.
Second, Except the apperence, events in film happened in a tight time, which means it happened really fast. In the last two act, it only takes 20 minutes to tell (From Juliet gets a fake posion to they both died). I also find out in this film, it uses many skills that is fast scene, which just basiclly tells what happened, for example when Juliet mom tried to persuade Juliet to marry with Paris, it is going really quick. In my opinion, there are two reasons why director did that. First,it could be his own bias, he thought that is not important so he did not want to put more works there. Second, his main purpose is expressing his idea of Romeo and Juliet, to some extent,he doesn’t like the ending is sad, so he skiped some plots, he hopes he can show a ending that is not very tragic.
In addition, this film has another feeling when I am watching. Like what I said in previous, director changed some plots because he would like to add some comic stuffs in it. However, he brings fully sadness to audiences. In the scene that Romeo drinks the posion and at the same time Juliet wakes up. I feel extremely shame and pity for them.

The play of Romeo and Juliet
A good literature must follow a pattern that leads a whole play make senses. And this pattern includes many things, such as settings, musics/sounds,climax and time. Romeo and Juliet is a classical example, which basically tells a miserable story. The story embroidered on Romeo and Juliet and reflect many conflicts. And the general time line is from Romeo and Juliet first see each other, and then they fell in love and they met so many problems that given by their hostile famailes, ultimately they died in love.
In this play, the major conflict is between Romeo, juliet and their families. In my opinion, I supporte their families trying to stop their love for two reasons. First, it shows clearly on the timeline that Romeo and Juliet just meet first time and then fall in love, this love is just too hury. readers will easily think that they love each other’s appearence but not soul. Second, it will be very boring if delete this conflict. This story is about great love,so it is necessary to give them some difficulties. Hence it shows nothing can bother people who are in love. Also, conflict developed plot pretty much, for example when they thinking of an idea that can avoid the wedding.
There is another interesting character in the play called Firiar Lawrence who seem to be out of the pattern. Because it is hard to figure he is bad or not. He is like a problem solver, he came up so many ideas to help Romeo and Juliet, but we don’t know what is his purpose. He might hides something, he might has his own desire. He is a mystery character in the play. My expression of him is not good, oppositily I think he indirectly caused the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Therefore he can be one of the conflicts or a problem that Romeo and Juliet have to overcome.
Play is not a simple literature because it includes not only languages, but sounds and Images. Souds and Images’s functions are mostly for explaining. For instance “It was the lark, the herald of the morn,no nightingale.” suggests it is morning now. Of course-during the play, there should be a part of lark’s sing.
Climax is the mosting excited part of the play, it decides what kind of result is going to be. For Romeo and Juliet, between Juliet fake death and die for love is the climax. It tells they will not have a happy ending. Moreover, climax is also for telling theme, which is nothing can stop the true love, people are brave when they fall in love because they deeply know they are not alone. However the love that is not blessed by people is doomed to be costly whether soul or life. It is just like Romeo and Juliet, they died for love. To some extent, they are successful, they go to other place to love to stay forever.
These three factors make a good play. Always remember play is not a simple literature, play has many famaily members follow as one pattern, which are conflicts, musics and climaxs.

Quiz The last question
I would ask Romeo and Juliet perform on the stage at same time. Romeo is in front of the Juliet, which is just like the balcony scene. Audiences are able to see both characters' emotion clearly. Also, audience can easily figure out what difference between Romeo and Juliet.
Romeo: I was so happy today, no I mean I was so excited today. I saw Juliet, we talked and we will marry soon. I don't know how to express my emotion now because I am really excited. It seemed unreal to me when I said goodbye to her. I can say the most pleasurable experience of the evening was our wonderful conversation. At first I was afraid she would not accept me. If so, I would be upset. However, as I expected, my bright angel made the right decision. She believed in me, so I have to treat her as well as I can. I've decided that our wedding is going to hold in few days. Be honest, I can't wait anymore. I don't want her wait so long, we are mean to be together. It's our fate. Well, after wedding, I will travel with her or do something else. I just want to stay with her. Today is like a dream and I hope it will never ends.
Juliet: Bright and lovely day, Romeo appeared under my balcony. How does he knew I wanted to see him so much? My Romeo, he is just too amazing. He promised we are going to have wedding in few days, and I believed him. The only worry is not about him, it is about me. Should I tell all of these to my nurse mommy? Maybe I have to tell her, because she is the only one I can tell all the secrets and worries. She can give me advice to my future and it can also helps my love Romeo.

Four different types of the scene
Four different types of the scene
Iwatched four different types of the balcony scene which include cartoon, staging, film and old version film. They all expressed a feeling that Romeo was afraid to tell Juliet his love but also he wanted her know because he could not wait, and in fact Juliet crushed on him as well. Thus, characters have to show pure, innocent and excited.
For that cartoon, I laughed because characters were so cute, and pictures were beautiful that all lights turing on. However, it does not like a romentic play that is more like a funny play. It lost what Shakespeare want to express. Children may love this cartoon because it is easy to understand.
In my opinion, old version film is the worst. First, the actor of Romeo did not like a son from a rich famaily. He hided in the bush, it seemed to be a theif who is ready to enter from the balcony. Except this, there is another reason that cause I dislike this version. Romeo,a romantic man had no face expression when he saw Juliet. This is not acceptable.
The new version of the film is just normal, there is nothing special and nothing silly. My favorite one is that staging, when I first watch that, I noticed this is the longest one. I wonder maybe longer time means telling story more detailed. And later I found I was right. Both actors(Romeo and Juliet) expreesed their moon perfectly. They tried to show their love is difficult but they have firm confidence to countinue. In addition, there was no much stage property. Hence, audience can pay whole attention to these actors. I was no longer distracted by whether bush or lights. Admittedly, staging version has disadvantage which is actors are steep, they kind of exaggerated the play. Furthermore, Juliet’s actress is just too old to be Juliet.

motivation
In a film or a book, there are some plots that can attract audience or reader. And we call that conflict which means the interaction between people. In a good work, author has to design what makes this character decide to do someting. In another word, behind every charcter there must be a purpose. And this is really important because it will make more sense for audiences.
Laertes in the famous novel Hamlet is a example. He was a knight who is good at sword fighting. And his sister Ophelia fell in love with Hamlet, but his father Polonius who was an old fogey tried to stop their dating. Polonius thought Hamlet was crazy,so he usually spied Hamlet. His motivation is simple, that he did not want his daughter marry with a crazy guy. However, he dead sooner when he hided behind the curtain and overheaded the conversation between Hamlet and the queen. Hamlet predicted the king was hided so he thorned. This was actually a wrong action because Ophelia was very sorrowful and dead by mistakely falling in the river. Two famaily dead made Laeter just want to revenge. Hence, he challenged Hamlet in public. They decided to have a sword fight. Before the duel, Laetes put posion on his sword. This indicates he wanted to kill Hamlet so hard. Moreover, he was an prudential person because sword was enough to damage Hamlet, but he used posion for sure that Hamlet would not alive. During the duel, Laertes was suppressed by Hamlet until Hamlet was distracted because his mom drink the posion by mistake. At the end, Laeters did thorned in Hamlet’s body. His goal was achieved, he revenged for his father and his sister successfully. As the result, he was dead too. He was killed by Hamlet. When Hamlet got thorned, he used all his power to kill Laertes and he was successed. Anyway after this fight, lots of things changed.
These two people had fight because they both wanted to revenge for their famaily. They had confidence to win,but the result was bad. In fact Laeters’s challenge accelerated the Hamlet’s revenge plan. From my standpoint, I do not think Laertes fought with Hamlet for keeping new king safe. Laertes was just eager to renge for his father and sister. His motivation in the whole book is the simplest. He was a strong knight but kind of lack wise because he was so impetuous when he knew his father and sister dead.

"To be or not to be" which is a super famous saying in Hamlet because people are able to get the theme through this sentence. And my understanding for this is Hamlet was actually an person who was brave to promote justice. And his process of revenge gave him too much pressure. This soliloquy gives reader a chance to know Hamlet's characteristic. However, if it were a conversation, it would not clear what Hamlet really thought. Therefore, I agree with Benedict Cumberbatch that soliloquy allows audience to empathize Hamlet better.
Conversation needs at least two people, which sometimes obscure one's opinion. However soliloquy only has one person talking so every single words he speaks is his major purpose. And it is just soliloquy's function which is emphasizing. Moreover it indicates Hamlet has consciousness that step by step revenge for his father.
It is an important speech because this part determines Hamlet is struggling in whether kill his uncle or not. At first,Hamlet thought everyone is good guy. However his father got murdered, he realized this world is not not that simple and pure. People can do many crazy things in order to get what they want. As he was considering to be or not to be, he was becoming a real adult who knows darkness is in the world.
This soliloquy is kind of theme of Hamlet, which tells advantage and disadvantage of revenge. In my opinion, Hamlet never surely decide to revenge, although he kept doing things for revenge. Anyway his revenge process is challenging.

Hamlet scene analyse
From my stand point, the scene Hamlet and his dad met is the most interesting part. When I read this part, I didn't think this fits in this book's style because I don't believe there is a ghost in the world. Thus it seems fake. However this is a easy way to tell Hamlet how his father dead. What is memorable to me is the importance of this plot. This is a beginning that Hamlet start to revenge. The author describes Hamlet was so angry about it, that he put his hands on his head. This action means Hamlet realized this world is not full of love or warm. Horrible and terrible things can occur.
